If you’re a product of the late ’70s & early ’80s, then many of your best memories can be attributed to eating sugar cereal featuring some wacky character while watching Saturday morning cartoons. But with the advent of the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon running kids programming 24/7 and the word “sugar” becoming the most hated word in our vocabulary many of today’s kids are missing out on a piece of Americana.
Times do change, and that’s a good thing especially since no one can imagine living without our Kindles and iPads. However, slowing down for the simple life and enjoying a tasty treat on the weekends should not be a guilty pleasure but rather a rite of passage. Yes, obesity is a concern and too much TV can rot a brain, but the need for over stimulation at all times, especially on the weekends is not necessarily a plus.
One of the philosophies I have is “anything in moderation.” People like to say don’t eat this or don’t watch that. Stop acting like Judge Dredd and enjoy … in moderation. I say to the sugar haters, don’t ban sugar drinks over 16 oz. in NYC, don’t hate on Sugar Smacks (not Honey Smacks) and put down your Cream of Wheat and enjoy a healthy heaping of ’80s gold.
Friends like Tony the Tiger, Sonny the Cuckoo Bird, Lucky and my favorite Boo Berry enjoying a spoonful of delight in 30 seconds is surely more entertaining than any presidential debate moderated by some MSNBC blowhard and way more delicious.
